Itchy Pet, See Your Vet!

Yes, folks. It is allergy season and I can tell you this for certain since I have dry eyes, sniffly nose and a whole lotta sneezing! With all the dust, pollen, grass, mold, dander and ragweed invading our air, it’s no surprise that not only humans are affected, so are pets!

Research has shown the majority of Canadian dog owners are unaware that the signs of seasonal allergies in humans are different than the ones in dogs. One of the most tell-tale signs of seasonal allergies in your fur baby is itching and scratching.

Learn As You Go.

I didn’t always have a pet. In fact, the last time I had a dog was when I was too young to care for him myself. With that said, I’ve had to learn a lot with Lincoln or as he’s better known as, Lincoln the French. He’s a curious pup and he’s often into everything.

Learning that he could potentially suffer from seasonal allergies like I do was surprising! Knowing that, it made me want to learn all I could about it and the signs to watch out for.

Dogs with seasonal allergies will not want you anywhere near their ears, may scratch a lot, have itchy, red skin or excessively chew on their paws. A simple way to remember the signs is to think ESP: Ears, Skin, Paws.

What’s Making Them Itch?

Most pet owners, including me, don’t know that for dogs, allergens are mostly absorbed through the skin, not their respiratory system. Actually, skin issues are among the most common reasons dog owners bring in their pets to see their veterinarians.

I know that if there’s something wrong with Lincoln, I worry. I worry a lot. Luckily, vets have solutions for pet allergies like topical therapies, oral medications, soothing shampoos and desensitization (immunotherapy or allergy shots/drops) as well as veterinary exclusive pet food specifically designed to address environmental allergies.

You’re Ready to Cruise.

Knowing the signs of ESP (Ears, Skin, Paws) you are armed with the power of knowledge! You will be ready to cruise through allergy season together. If your pet is exhibiting those symptoms, you know that he or she should see vet to be properly diagnosed.

For us, we know that with Lincoln being a French Bulldog, he is prone to environmental allergies and for that reason, we are vigilant as the allergy season kicks into gear. Lincoln loves to go on rides and since we’ve used ESP and he’s clear so far, he can cruise and enjoy the weather.
